Following on from our article last week on 3 examples of great EVPs in Tech, this week we take a deep dive in to the construction industry.

We know that having a strong employer value proposition (EVP) is key to attracting and retaining top talent in today’s market.

What does this mean? This means having a clear set of benefits and values that your company offers its employees and that differentiates you in the market.

With construction being one of the largest employing industries in Australia, the competition for top talent is fierce, and so the need to have strong EVP is important.

Here, we look at 3 top examples of great employer value propositions in the Construction industry and break down why we think they have done a good job to inspire creating your EVP and how you can bring it to life!

Hutchinson

https://www.hutchinsonbuilders.com.au/careers

Hutchinson Builders are a successful family-owned Australian Construction company and as well as having a strong customer brand, they tick all the right boxes when it comes to having a strong employer brand too.

Authenticity

Hutchinson’s family-owned ethos and values extends through to their EVP. They lead with authenticity and place strong emphasis on connections and community, demonstrated through both text and images on their careers page.

They also colloquially refer to themselves as ‘Hutchies’ on their website, and reference ‘The Hutchies Way’ to talk about their culture, cementing the down to earth and uniqueness you get from scanning their careers page.

Hutchinson brings this to life through photos of their current employees, as well as stories of their journeys at Hutchinson.

On top of this, they have a dedicated Instagram page called Hutchies1912, which showcases employee events and life at Hutchinson.

All of this gives candidates authentic insights into what it’s like to work at the company and where they can fit in.

Strong Careers Page

As we know, in this age where everything and anything can be researched and recorded, candidates want to have as much information in front of them as possible. Hutchinson ticks the box when it comes to this as they have a dedicated careers page where someone can access all the information they need to know more about the company, team and opportunities.

Career Development

Career development and training is at the top of the list for many candidates and Hutchinson makes this front and centre of their EVP, with their mission being ‘to find the right person, and provide them with the right training to set them on the ultimate career trajectory’.

Hutchies go one step further than a lot of companies here with them even having a separate site dedicated to training through their RTO – https://training.hutchies.com.au/.

This is a brilliant resource for employees, and for someone looking to gain skills in the construction industry, as well as a great way of demonstrating to potential employees how they could grow their career.

The message is clear, you can join Hutchinson and stay whilst growing both personally and professionally.

Why it Works

Hutchinson have a clear point of difference and a clear message – they care about their employees and the culture they have fostered, clear from the team photos placed throughout the website. They also want to set their employees up to succeed. They put a big emphasis on training and development, and from delving into Hutchinson’s EVP, you definitely get the feeling that it wouldn’t just be a job, but that working at Hutchinson would be a career. They are authentic and down to earth and they are able to communicate this through photos and statements from their employees, giving candidates a true insight in to what life at Hutchinson would look like.

Lendlease

Lendlease is a multinational construction and real estate company, and another strong employer brand in the construction industry.

They value their staff

The first thing that is evident from looking at Lendlease’s careers page is the value they place on their people.

In these employee introduction videos, you are able to hear from employees in a variety of roles, making it easy for a prospective employee to see how they could fit in with the company and team. The use of video here is very effective in really getting an authentic look in to the life at Lendlease!

What’s in it for the candidate

Lendlease clearly demonstrates what is in it for the candidate through their benefits being displayed on the careers page.

With the candidate landscape having changed dramatically, showcasing what benefits the candidate can access is putting your best foot forward.

With benefits such as wellbeing leave, a ‘suite of mental health programs’ and being able to purchase extra annual leave, Lendlease have invested time and money into the care of their employees. Something very important in the construction industry and across the working landscape in general.

They encourage internal mobility, have allocated career frameworks and have practical learning opportunities as part of their Learning & Development programs.

All of this is brilliant for potential employees looking at Lendlease’s careers site as they are able to see how their career can grow and how they can learn.

Why it Works

Lendlease have leaned into their unique advantages as a large business and place a strong emphasis on learning, growth and career development within the business. A main draw in their EVP is that by joining Lendlease you are supported not only to succeed but to grow your career in which ever direction you want to go. Similar to Hutchinson, your journey at Lendlease is a career rather than just a job. They bring this value proposition to life through videos and images of different roles and a diverse demographic of employees, making it easy for candidates across all areas to see where they can fit in.

Richard Crookes

Our 3rd example of a great EVP is Richard Crookes.

Another family run construction business, from the first glance at the careers page of Richard Crookes, their message is clear; their people are at the centre of their business, describing it as a ‘family with a united purpose’. This shows a prospective employee that the team culture is strong, with their strong emphasis on working together giving a sense of belonging.

The proof is in the pudding, Richard Crookes showcases their long term tenure, with 33% of employees staying for 10+ years.

Work Perks

Richard Crookes knows that the talent landscape has changed and that to genuinely care about their staff and to stay ahead in the market, candidates want more employee benefits that go further than just their salary. Top talent aren’t going to be drawn to an organisation because of the free lunch or the discounts, but they are going to feel more appreciated for the work they are doing. After all, it’s a two-way street, and if a candidate is signing on the dotted line to put in the hard work for a business, they want to know outside of remuneration what they are going to get in return. We spend on average 90,000 hours working in our lifetime and employers are now waking up to the fact that people are… people, and that it’s more than just a salary that will make people happy and give people purpose at work.

Bringing their EVP to life

Richard Crookes brings their EVP to life through the use of video – this isn’t a fancy promotional video, this is a video of the leadership team talking about the cohesiveness and family orientated culture, as well as employees in a variety of roles talking about life at Richard Crookes, with candidates getting an insight in to what work looks like on a day to day basis. Through this authentic approach, Richard Crookes are enhancing their employer brand and people are able to gain a sense of who Richard Crookes are and how they could fit in.

As well as video, Richard Crookes includes news articles showcasing their team successes with photos, for example winning top 10 places to work in 2019. Using this type of content and including photos of staff brings their EVP to life and gives candidates an insight in to the team culture and success.

Why it Works

Richard Crookes’ EVP is simple, but effective. They know their candidate market and they know that the world of work has changed. The construction industry can be known for long hours and hard work, but they clearly demonstrate their appreciation for their staff with a range of benefits. Another element of their EVP that stands out is the strong team culture and sense of being a part of a ‘family’ with a common goal. This sense of purpose and belonging is big on many candidates lists and this is front and centre with plenty of photos of employees alongside the use of video to bring the EVP to life.

Your EVP

One of the key takeaways from these 3 examples of brilliant EVPs is the authenticity that all 3 companies show on their careers page. They lean into their history, background and who they are as a company and as a team of people.

All three companies have a strong focus on team cohesiveness and belonging, making it clear that their people are their greatest asset. This is shown through the use of employee generated content in photos, videos and testimonials, giving candidates a real insight in to life at these companies and how they could be a part of the puzzle.

Another key factor in all 3 EVPs is the career development and learning that employees can experience at these companies. Especially in Hutchinson and Lendlease, it is clear that someone can join and grow both personally and professionally, being supported every step of the way.
