Chat GPT! It’s the hottest topic on the world wide web right now!

And rightly so, this is the first real world useable AI tool that’s been made available to the public, for free!

But as great as Chat GPT is, can it be used as a tool to benefit you as a Hiring Manager or a Recruiter? Let’s take a look.

We are going to take a deep dive and find out if we think that Chat GPT help is a time-saver, time waster or a life saver.

Firstly, we asked Chat GPT itself how it could help a hiring manager or recruiter, and this was its reply:

As you can see, Chat GPT can do it all! Does this mean Recruiters and Hiring Managers will be out of a job? Let’s find out.

1. Screening Resumes

In order for Chat GPT to screen resumes, this is the process that has to happen:

Although it would seem initially that Chat GPT could be good for saving time to screen resumes, by the time you have copied and pasted the resume into chat GPT, as well as copy and pasted the predefined criteria and keywords, you could have screened the resume yourself.

A magic skill that recruiters have is to be able to scan a resume within seconds to know whether a candidate would be right for a role or for others they have available. Indeed reports that employers look at resumes for six to seven seconds. In this case, a human being will be more efficient than AI.

Conclusion: Time Waster

While Chat GPT can theoretically screen a resume for you the reality is you’ll spend longer setting it up to do so and you’re going to miss out on those candidates you could use for another role.

2. Conducting Initial Interviews

Chat GPT says that it can conduct initial interviews. When we asked it to conduct an interview for a Project Manager candidate within Construction, it came up with some solid & rounded questions that could really assist in understanding the candidate enough to make sure you wouldn’t be running out of questions in the interview.

However, what Chat GPT leaves out is an individual touch. Realistically, human beings want to be treated like human beings and having questions that relate to someone’s specific experience is a lot more personalised and shows that you have taken the time to understand their experience, rather than generic questions.

Conclusion: Time Saver

Overall, Chat GPT’s interview questions can definitely help as a time saver and as a guideline for what to think about when interviewing but we have to remember to add in individuality and a personal touch to conduct a positive candidate experience.

3. Candidate Engagement & Communication i.e. Copywriting

According to Chat GPT, candidate engagement and communication can be carried out via chat interface, email, text, voice assistant or video.

Chat GPT can be used to create generic email templates which could speed up and create a more efficient candidate experience (see below). However, a key part of the candidate experience is for candidates to feel excited to be joining a team culture that fits individually to them. Nearly 4 in 5 candidates (78%) say the overall candidate experience they receive is an indicator of how a company values its people [Career Builder].

A good candidate experience can’t be generic. As a team culture is defined by the people that work there, Chat GPT just doesn’t cut it compared to a human being.

Conclusion: Time Waster

Using ChatGPT as the be all and end all for your job ads and candidate communication is not the right strategy.

But, never fear because there are some really good uses for ChatGPT in recruitment if you do it right.

Here is our list of how and what you can use Chat GPT for in Recruitment.

One thing that Chat GPT can help recruiters and hiring managers with is time saving their content writing.

We already know that marketing and content is now a big part of recruitment and something that Recruiters and Hiring Managers often do not have is time.

Using Chat GPT to take the load off and give you a foundation for copywriting is a strategy we think everyone should incorporate.

Chat GPT could be helpful with recruitment content across the following areas:

1. Job Advert writing

Job advert writing can often take time. Using Chat GPT could speed up your advert writing by creating a guideline and structure for your ad, however, something to remember is that job adverts now more than ever, need to communicate a company’s employer value proposition, which is individual to every company. It is important when writing an effective job advert to paint a picture of the company, team and culture, and this is the type of information that must come from a human.

Tip: use chat GPT to give you a cohesive structure for your ads.

2. LinkedIn content post ideas

A personal brand & employer brand is everything and LinkedIn is where you can market this brand to potential candidates. Regular posting on LinkedIn is a great recruitment marketing tool but can often leave hiring managers and recruiters looking at a blank screen. Chat GPT can help with structuring a LinkedIn post or can re-word your post to help you with putting pen to paper. However, when it comes to ideas, authenticity will always win in your personal & employer branding, so remember to use it as a time saving tool rather than relying on it solely.

Tip: use chat GPT to help flesh out your ideas and make writing faster.

3. Writing emails

As mentioned above, Chat GPT can help with re-wording content and this could be great for emails or creating a template to help you save time down the line. We asked Chat GPT to create an email thanking a candidate for their application and the result was a good email!

This could be great as a time saver, but you will more than likely need to follow up with the candidate personally to either screen them, or give them a reason why they weren't successful.

Tip: use chat GPT to ensure your email is well written and to make sure you have included all the information you need.

Final Thoughts

Final thoughts, can Chat GPT revolutionise your recruitment process? No. Can it help? Yes.

ChatGPT is an amazing tool if used correctly. It can speed up your writing, create better structure and improve your writing style, but use it as a tool and not as the solution. Good recruitment marketing is about authenticity, which is where ChatGPT falls short. Add in your own tone, wording and information otherwise you will fall into the abyss of AI generated content that doesn’t produce results.
