Personal and Professional Background
• Name: Biby Thomas • Previous Country of Residence: New Zealand • Current City in Australia: Bendigo • Experience as a Nurse: 8 years • Specialization: Surgical
What motivated you to move to Australia?
My main motivation to move to Australia was to be closer to my family. Being separated from them was tough, and the opportunity to reunite with them in Australia was something I couldn’t pass up. I also saw Australia as a place where I could build a more stable future for my family, especially since the climate and lifestyle are quite similar to what we were used to in New Zealand. This move wasn’t just about advancing my career—it was about bringing our family together in a place where we could all thrive
How smooth was the move to Australia?
Moving country isn’t a small task so there is some stress and work to be done. Finding schools, a job for my husband and also setting up in a new community. We didn’t know many people in Bendigo when we first moved which makes it tough.
How does the work environment in Australia compare to New Zealand?
While the healthcare system and nursing practices in Australia were similar to those in New Zealand, I found the initial work environment challenging. Over time, I adapted through persistence and by seeking clarification when needed where things were different.
How do you find living in Australia compared to New Zealand?
Living in Bendigo has been a positive experience so far, especially since my daughter feels more at home in Australia. It’s not too different to New Zealand so that has made Although the regional area doesn’t offer as much excitement as some of the larger cities, we enjoy taking trip around the state.
We have found the culture easy to learn and adapt to as Aussies and kiwis are quite similar.
How has your work-life balance changed since moving to Australia?
Balancing a full-time nursing job with family life in a new community has been a bit of a challenge. To help manage this, I brought my mother to Australia to support her and spend time with her daughter.
How would you rate your overall experience with our recruitment agency?
I would rate my experience with Stream as a 5 out of 5. Although there were some initial challenges with my relocation assistance, I wasn’t offered any upfront. Ryan was instrumental in helping to secure two months of free accommodation for me. This was a huge relief, as relocation costs can be a significant burden. Ryan’s dedication and the excellent job match he found for me outweighed any initial concerns. I also appreciated how streamlined the process was; Ryan took the initiative to expedite everything, which made the whole experience much smoother than I had anticipated.
